1890's Carlo Martello Bowlback Mandolin
Pictures of the Neapolitan Bowl Back Mandolin before and after repair.
Nut, bridge, machine heads and fretboard removed. Top taken off.
Tail splintered rosewood removed, new piece made and glued in position.
New linings made, glued in and the top edge profile remade. Relined with paper inside.
Rosewood side purfling made to provide flat surface.
The three top struts replaced, profiled and the top glued back on.
New top purflings made and installed. Mother of pearl binding replaced where good enough and twenty seven new pieces made with new three part wooden dividers.
New ebony fretboard made to 330mm scale length and old fret dots refitted. Narrowest fret wire used.
Nut height extended with bone, ebony bridge with bone saddle made to match remnants of the old one.
Small veneer repairs to head and machine heads re riveted inside.
French polished.
Strung with GHS ultra light (.009"- 032") loop end mandolin strings.
